A matrix homeserver most awkward

Logging in

There are many clients to choose from. Recommendations:

Web Element Web
Desktop Element Desktop
Mobile Element or FluffyChat

You will be asked for your mxid (of the form @username:awkward.party), or our server address https://matrix.awkward.party.

Security

Please make sure to use end-to-end encryption, as the server could always be compromised. This has to be enabled on a per room basis, but most clients will enable it by default. Your avatar and display name can be seen by other people on the network. Currently, avatars, titles, and the list of participants of rooms sadly cannot be encrypted.

To make absolutely sure that no one is listening in on your encrypted conversation, you can verify the devices of your conversation partners. The recommended clients support cross-signing and key backup. Together, they allow you to securely share encrypted message history between your devices, and make the verification process easier.

Explore

With your awkward.party account, you can join rooms on any server on the matrix network. To find rooms, search online, or through the matrix.org room directory. You can also use bridges to connect to other networks, such as Telegram and IRC.

Getting help

Currently, @steef:awkward.party administers the server. You can also ask questions in #lobby:awkward.party, which can only be joined with awkward.party accounts.

Please note

This is a small server set up for personal use, constrained by a personal budget. Things may break, data may get lost. We do make occasional encrypted off-site backups. Our storage space is limited, so we have an upload limit of 5 MB per file. Pictures are fine.

In order to protect our server from falling over, please do not join massive rooms.
